Botswana origin · recorded custody

Every diamond
has a beginning.
Now it has a record.

A connected provenance and certification programme for diamonds recovered in Botswana. Each custody movement is recorded by the business that handled it, and the Botswana Mark is granted only after independent review.

Two distinct statuses appear on every public record: a provenance history submitted by participants, and a Botswana Mark certification granted by the programme.

The chain

Four stages, one continuous record

Provenance is not a certificate issued at the end. It is the accumulated history of a stone, written as it moves from the mine to the market.

01 · Recovery

Recovered in Botswana

The operating mine and licence area are recorded at the point of recovery, with the reference that follows the stone.

02 · Cutting & polishing

Worked by a named factory

Each cutting and polishing house confirms receipt and records the work performed on the stone.

03 · Craft

Set and finished

Manufacturers and jewellers add their stage, so the completed piece carries the full sequence.

04 · Market

Offered by a participant

Sellers publish the record and their verified profile, giving buyers a direct route to the business.

Two separate things

The record is not the Mark

A diamond can carry an open provenance history without holding the Botswana Mark. We keep the two visibly apart, so a buyer always knows which party asserted what.

Participant-submitted

The provenance record

Origin, custody transfers and processing events, each attributed to the participant who submitted it and timestamped when received. The record states what happened and who reported it; it does not certify quality or value.

Programme-granted

The Botswana Mark

A certification decision made by the programme, on evidence, after an application is submitted and reviewed. It is granted, refused, or returned for correction — and it can be withdrawn if the evidence no longer stands.

Why Botswana

Value that stays where the stone was found

Botswana has built one of the most durable diamond economies in the world by insisting that recovery, sorting, cutting and trading happen on its soil. The programme exists to make that visible to the people who buy the finished stone.
